Beard and Mustache Transplant

Beard and mustache transplant is advised to people whose beard or mustache are thin or who suffer from lack of density due to various reasons. Today, voluminous and healthy looking beards are as important as healthy hair. Problems can be seen in the social life of men who can not get the image they want in their beards. Beard and mustache transplant is becoming more and more preferred and giving satisfying results thanks to developing hair transplantation technologies.

Why does beard and mustache fall or get thinner?

There may be many reasons for beard and mustache loss. Some of those;

  • Hormonal disorders
  • Accidents and burns
  • Damage to the skin as a result of laser hair removal
  • Ringworm. The disease, which is known in the medical literature as Alopecia Areata, can be seen not only in the hair but also in the eyebrows, beard, mustache and other parts of the body.
  • Hair pulling disorder, which is referred to as trichotillomania in the medical literature. There is a possibility that the pulled eyebrows will not grow again.

Every man who has completed his developmental age, a good general health condition, lost his beard and mustache for various reasons and enough donor area can have a beard and mustache transplant.

In some cases beard and mustache transplant is not recommended to cardiac, diabetic and high blood pressure patients.

Things to consider before beard and mustache transplant

All medicines used must be reported to the clinic where beard and mustache will be transplanted. Clinical check-up, blood test is performed by the clinic. Use of alcohol should be stopped 1 week before the procedure. If a blood thinner is used, it should be discontinued 2 weeks before the procedure. Shirt-style clothing is mandatory on the day of the procedure. Before the operation, the body should rest with a sleep of at least 8 hours and a good breakfast should be had 2 hours before the operation.

Beard and Mustache Transplant with FUE method

Before starting to the beard and mustache transplantation, a planning is made and it is determined how many grafts will be extracted and at which angles the beard will be transplanted.

When beard and mustache transplantation is performed with FUE method, hair roots are taken from the region called donor region. Retrieved hair roots are transferred to the beard and mustache area. Although FUE method is the most widely used hair transplantation method today, it is also the most suitable planting method for beard and mustache transplantation. The hair follicles suitable for your beard and mustache can be easily selected and removed from the donor area.

Before the procedure, an experienced specialist determines how many grafts are going to be planted and at which angles, calculates the beard density according to the volume of the hair and determines the areas where the grafts will be transplanted in the beard.

When the root extraction process is started, the hair roots which are healthy and compatible with the beard and mustache area are taken individually by a micromotor. The collected hair follicles are kept in a special solution to prevent from damaging.

The extracted grafts are inserted into the transplant area anesthesized with local anesthesia by opening channels. The process is completed after all the grafts are inserted. The process takes of 3-6 hours in total.

Things to consider after beard and mustache transplant

The process after beard and mustache transplant directly affects the success of the operation. Beard and mustache transplant is a more sensitive operation than hair transplant, since it is done on facial area. Because the face area is more sensitive than the hair area, the healing process takes longer, but with simple measures and points to take into consideration, the process can be easily circumvented.

The first week after the transplantation, the transplanted area should be protected from impacts and sunlight. If any medication has been given to the patient, those medications should be used regularly. And use of blood thinners should be avoided. The channels opened during beard and mustache transplant create some scabs on the face. These scabs are cleaned one week after the operation with wash up procedures and creams.

Heavy sports should be avoided in the first month, and the patient should not stay under the sun for a long time. Turkish baths are not allowed for the first 3 months.

Beards should not be shaved during the elongation process. It can be shaved with a razor, machine or scissors 6 months after the operation.
