Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is the name given to the problem of male breasts due to fatigue and hormones. The development of chest muscles is not defined as gynecomastia.

Gynecomastia usually occurs due to hormonal imbalances. Side effects of drugs that cause psychological stress can occasionally cause gynecomastia. Gynecomastia is seen in 40% of men between the ages of 10 and 16, where hormonal changes are intensified, and can be 65% during the fastest period of puberty. During puberty, 75% of gynecomastia is self-recovered in two years and 90% in three years. When the hormone balance in the body is restored at the end of adolescence, most gynecomastia are self-healing. Very few of them may not recover. Gynecomastia which is seen in advanced ages is usually caused by accumulation of fats in the chest area.

Gynecomastia Treatment

When the mammary gland is detected in the patient, only the excess of the mammary gland is removed. If there is excess fat in the mammary gland and breast tissue, the mammary gland as well as the fat tissue are treated. If the problem in the breast is only the increase in breast fat, the breast fat is reduced without a surgical intervention on the mammary gland.

Gynecomastia Surgery

Gynecomastia operation is performed under local or general anesthesia in the hospital and lasts for 1 hour. Pre-operative planning is performed. If there is an excess of the mammary gland, the excess mammary gland is removed from the lower part of the nipple with an u-shaped incision. If there is an increase in fat in the breast, the laser liposuction is also added to the treatment. Only if there is an excess of fat in the breast and the mammary gland is normal only laser lipolysis is applied.

A large number of patients can be treated with these methods. If the nipple and breast skin is too drooping then breast lift surgery can also be done. In such a case, a nipple or a downwardly extending incision or an inverted T-shaped track may be present around the nipple. These traces and lengths will increase as the breast sag.

Recovery Process

After gynecomastia surgery, the patient may return to work on the same day. After the surgery, a bandage or elastic bandage is applied to the breast area. After 3 days the patient can take a shower. The patient should wear a corset for 2-3 weeks.
