  • What is a Gastric Balloon?
A gastric balloon is a non-surgical, endoscopic method used for weight loss and obesity treatment. A hollow balloon is placed in the stomach using endoscopy. The silicone balloon inserted is inflated with liquid or air. The balloon in the stomach aims to make the patient feel full with less food. Following the procedure, a weight loss of about 10% - 15% of body weight is targeted with an appropriate diet program.
  • Advantages of Gastric Balloon
It is a non-surgical intervention. It is applied using endoscopic methods, so there is no pain or discomfort associated with surgical interventions. It is easy to apply. It is a widely used non-surgical weight loss method. Effective long-term weight loss is possible.
  • Disadvantages of Gastric Balloon
Some patients may experience nausea or vomiting in the first few days. The gastric balloon can remain in the stomach for a maximum of 1 year. It needs to be removed again with endoscopy afterward.
  • Who Can Opt for a Gastric Balloon?
Individuals with a Body Mass Index (BMI) above 28, who have previously tried to lose weight through diet and exercise but have been unsuccessful, and who do not require surgery but want to lose weight non-surgically may choose a gastric balloon.
  • How is Non-surgical Weight Loss Done?
Sedation is applied to the patient before the procedure. This is necessary to prevent discomfort due to endoscopy. The balloon is placed using an endoscope, and it is inflated with an appropriate amount of liquid or air. The procedure takes an average of 15-20 minutes. After resting for 1-2 hours, the patient is discharged.
  • Post-Procedure Process:
In the first week after the procedure, patients may experience nausea and vomiting after consuming food. These issues usually resolve after the first week. As with all weight loss interventions, post-procedure nutrition and exercise are as important as the procedure itself. The patient must adhere to a diet program tailored to their needs. Eating small and frequent meals, ensuring meals contain protein, and chewing food slowly and thoroughly are important.
