Excimer Laser
Excimer laser is widely used in the treatment of refractive errors such as hyperopia, myopia and astigmatism. It is a UV laser with a wavelength of 193nm obtained by electrically stimulating the argon-fluoride gas mixture.
Refractive Errors
Refractive errors are one of the most common eye problems. In a normal eye, external rays break through various layers and reach the visual point on the retina. In some cases, fracture does not occur in a healthy way and vision problems may occur. Low vision, pain and discomfort in the eyes are symptoms of refractive errors.
Myopia: The rays coming from the outside are focused before they reach the visual point. In this case, the patient has to wear glasses to see far.
Astigmatism: Corneal deformity. Causes reflection and blurred vision.
Hyperopia: Anterior-posterior diameter of the eye is shorter than normal. Glasses must be used to see clearly.
Treatment methods
Excimer laser treatment is divided into different branches according to the method used.
LASIK
The corneal layer is anesthetized with anesthetic drops. The instrument, called as a speculum, is placed to prevent the movement of the eyelids. An incision is made to the corneal layer and the lid formed as a result of the incision is removed. Excimer Laser is applied to the underlying corneal tissue. After the application, the incision is closed and the operation is terminated.
PRK – LASEK
The epithelial layer located at the outermost part of the corneal layer is removed and Excimer Laser is applied. This removal is performed with the help of surgical instrument in PRK method and alcohol solution in LASEK method. And epithelial layer is put into place after Excimer Laser. A contact lens is weared by the patient and the eye heals within 2-3 hours. The success rate in the treatment of the patients with low eye prescription is high.
To whom can Excimer Laser be applied?
It can be applied to people over 18 years of age, with myopia up to -10 degrees, hyperopia up to 6 degrees and astigmatism up to 6 degrees and who have suitable eye structure.
In addition to pregnant women and nursing mothers, excimer Laser cannot be applied to those people with diseases such as glaucoma, keratoconus, diabetes and rheumatism.
Before treatment
It is determined which treatment is appropriate for the person by examinations and tests Necessary instructions are given by the doctor.
Patients who use hard contact lenses should stop using them for 3 weeks and who use soft contact lenses for 1 week before the operation.
After treatment
Burning, watering or blurred vision in the eyes is normal for 3-5 hours after treatment. Eye drops should be used regularly. After 1 day, the patient can return to his / her daily life. Eye makeup should not be weared and the pool / sea should be avoid avoided for 3 weeks.
